Using ATLAS.ti
The Five-Level QDA Method
Series of step by step ATLAS.ti tutorials to take you through the process of analysing qualitative data with ATLAS.ti and get the most from the software.

These ATLAS.ti videos supplement our textbook Qualitative Analysis using ATLAS.ti: The Five-Level QDA method.
They take the key learning points to undertake ATLAS.ti thematic analysis, bring the Five-Level QDA method to life and help you harness ATLAS.ti powerfully.
Videos are organised as follows:

Component Orientation videos supplement the descriptions in Chapter 5 about how each ATLAS.ti component works - illustrating "what is going on" in the program.

The Analytic Planning Worksheet videos describe the layout and workings of the worksheet which help to plan and implement analysis in the most expedient way.
The Case Illustration videos supplement the real-world projects described in Chapters 8 and 9 - demonstrating the stages, phases, and analytic tasks undertaken in a literature review and a thematic analysis and how they were accomplished in ATLAS.ti.

As well as these tutorials, we also provide tailored, face to face or online ATLAS.ti training for you, either individually, or for groups of researchers. Please see either our coaching or training pages for more information.

Please note these videos are not intended as stand-alone instruction. They assume you have read the read the relevant sections referred to in the videos as the videos do not repeat this information. If you would like to order a book please see the Routledge website.
Five-Level QDA is a registered trademark. If you are an instructor and would like to use the videos in your courses to accompany the text, please get in touch.

Component Orientation Videos in ATLAS.ti (Ch 5)

These orientations supplement the descriptions in Chapter 5 about how each component works - they let you know "what is going on" in the programme. When you need detailed information about operating the program, you will then be well prepared to consult the latest version of the online ATLAS.ti 8 Manual.
ATLAS.ti Documents

This video is in two parts, introducing DOCUMENTS and how you ADD and IMPORT them to an ATLAS.ti-PROJECT, and the actions that can be taken on DOCUMENTS.

Part 1 introduces the topics in both Part 1 and Part 2 of this video and continues with demonstrating DOCUMENTS and how you ADD and IMPORT them to an ATLAS.ti-PROJECT.

Part 2 continues with a review of the component-specific actions relevant to DOCUMENTS.

Here is a Training Topic to download with further guidance on importing survey data from Excel spreadsheets.
ATLAS.ti Groups and Smart-Groups

These videos demonstrate how Groups and Smart-groups work in the same way for all these components.

Part 1 introduces the topics in both Part 1 and Part 2 of this video and continues with demonstrating how to construct GROUPS and SMART-GROUPS.

Part 2 reviews the component-specific actions relevant to GROUPS and SMART-GROUPS.
ATLAS.ti Linking Codes to Quotations

This video is in two parts, demonstrating how to link CODES to QUOTATIONS, both manually and through auto-coding, different ways to organise CODES, and the actions that can be taken on CODES.

Part 1 introduces the topics in both Part 1 and Part 2 of this video and continues with demonstrating how to link CODES to QUOTATIONS, both manually and through auto-coding.

Part 2 demonstrates the different ways to organize CODES and reviews the component-specific actions relevant to CODES.
ATLAS.ti Coded Quotation

This video is in two parts, introducing simple and complex retrieval of CODED-QUOTATIONS using the Query Tool, and the actions that can be taken on CODED-QUOTATIONS.

Part 1 introduces the topics in both Part 1 and Part 2 of this video, and demonstrates simple and complex retrieval of CODED-QUOTATIONS using the Query Tool, focussing on the most commonly used operators: OR, AND, NOT, and CO-OCCUR.

Part 2 continues with counting CODED-QUOTATIONS, and reviews the component-specific actions relevant to CODED-QUOTATIONS.
ATLAS.ti Smart-code and Smart-code Capture

This video is in two parts, demonstrating the 14 operators of the Query Tool in preparation for constructing Queries and creating SMART-CODES, how to construct a Query with integrated use of the Co-occurrence Table, and how to save a Query as a SMART-CODE and a SMART-CODE SNAPSHOT.

The Analytic Planning Worksheet (Ch 6)

The following resources supplement the section in Chapter 6 on how Analytic Planning Worksheets have been designed and are used.

An overview of the real-world research project (called the "DMO project") which is used to illustrate the following videos and the accompanying Analytic Planning Worksheets.
PART 1 - The strategies levels of the Analytic Planning Worksheet

This video demonstrates the layout and workings of the Analytic Planning Worksheet, focusing on the strategies levels in the top sections of the Worksheet.

First please download and read the overview of the DMO project which is used in the following resources.
You can also download here a MS Word template of the Analytic Planning Worksheet which can be used as is, or adapted for your needs.
PART 2 - The tactics levels of the Analytic Planning Worksheet

This video focuses on the bottom sections of the Worksheet which facilitate the translation of analytic tasks into software tactics, as described in Chapter 6.

Please download here the completed Analytic Planning Worksheet/ATLAS.ti for Phase 3 of the 'DMO project', which is illustrated in the following video.
Case Illustration of a straightforward project: a literature review (Ch 8)

These videos are a supplement to the cases illustrations in Chapter 8. The videos demonstrate the stages, phases, and analytic tasks described in the chapters.
Case illustration of a straightforward project: A literature review

The five demonstration videos bring to life the whole project stage by stage.
We assume that you have watched the Component Orientation videos and read the description of the project in Chapter 8 because the demonstrations do not repeat this information.
Case Illustration of a sophisticated project: a discourse analysis (Ch 9)

These videos are in three parts: demonstration, dialogue and translation videos.
The demonstration videos bring to life the whole project, stage by stage, the dialogue videos discuss different aspects of how the project was conducted and the translation videos demonstration the translation process for two of the analytical tasks listed in chapter 9.
Case illustration of a sophisticated project: A discourse analysis

The four demonstration videos bring to life the whole project stage by stage. We assume that you have watched the Component Orientation videos and read the description of the project in Chapter 9 because the demonstrations do not repeat this information.
The four dialogue videos with the case contributor, Dr. Trena Paulus, discuss different aspects of how the project was conducted.
The dialogue is in three parts, preceded by a Watch Me First video that introduces the content of the three parts.

Translation of an analytical task

The two translation videos demonstrate the translation process for two of the analytic tasks listed in Chapter 9.
Because there are always different ways to fulfil an analytic task, these videos demonstrate contrasting ways to translate the same analytic task, and we discuss the pros and cons of each way. The associated Analytic Planning Worksheets are downloadable below as PDFs.
The first translation video is more straightforward; the second is more sophisticated and introduces the Translation Step 4 Worksheet that is included in the downloadable PDF. These Step 4 Worksheets will also be used in all the Harnessing Component videos.
